March 2000- A turn for the worse…..

March 2000 was a turning point in my life. After the events of this year, and one final convention. I would have a break of a good 3 or 4 years. Not through choice but through necessity.

We had had a party at work one Friday night. It was a James Bond themed party that went on until the early hours of the morning. I got in around 6am.

Before grabbing a couple of hours sleep I went to check on my mum. She hadn’t been at work for a couple of days due to feeling unwell. She said she still didn’t feel great and would stay in bed.

I crashed out for a few hours.

Went to check on her off and on through the day. No real change. Went in around 7pm and I was unable to wake her or get any kind of reaction. I called for an ambulance.

Upon arriving at hospital I was told by the attending doctor that the outlook was grim. He was very callous and uncaring and I admit I nearly smacked him one.

To cut a long story short, mum survived the night and spent the next couple of months in a coma. When she finally woke she couldn’t walk and her memory was gone. That came back over time but she spent a number of months in rehab.

When she did eventually come home, she needed 24/7 care provided by my brother and myself, whilst working at the same time. So Wolf SG2 (that I had booked and paid for at SG1), would be my last event for a while.

The sad part is that mum passed away in February of 2004, and though her passing means I was able to attend events (not that she would have tried to stop me whilst alive, just wouldn’t have felt right) again, I know I’d still rather have her here…..
